What does a successful career life look like?

How do you define it?

To answer this question on "What does a fulfilling career mean?", you might probably begin to think about notable names like Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala , Tony Elumelu or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and you are neither wrong nor right.

These people and more like them have made a name in their respective fields and deserve their flowers. I give it to them.

However, one thing you should never lose sight of is the fact that success is personal. Very personal.

Therefore, you define what a successful career or business life means to you. You set your own success KPI and you determine when it is met or not.

I wrote an article a while ago about your career not being defined by a single role but a sum of all the things you have done and not done in your life.

You don't just wake up and one day to discover that you have a thriving career . You don't stumble on a fulfilling career like you would a job on a job listing board.

No.

You build it. You build a career life that works for YOU.

It is ok to want to be like someone you admire but it is important that your admiration for them drives you to make career decisions that work FOR YOU.

So, you build a successful career -

With personal values that reflect who you are and a vision of who are becoming.

With intentional choices that guide your actions.

With a personal and professional brand created to portray who you are becoming.

From my personal reflections and interactions with others, I have found out that no one gets on the journey of a fulfilling career with 100% certainty.

No, not one.

The active ingredient needed by every one is clarity. You don’t need to know your final destination, but you do need to know what matters to you: the values you won’t compromise on, the kind of work that energises you, the impact you want to have, the kind of life you want to live.

When you gain clarity on these, it will determine how you treat roles. You will be intentional about -

What kind of roles to take on or not.

How you treat the roles you do take on.

Producing results that reflect your values, serve your vision and support your brand.

When you gain clarity, you will know when to say N-O to certain offers even if it looks good on paper, because you are building a career and not chasing titles with deep pockets.

When you gain clarity, you will realise that even though your personal values are fixed, your vision might not be realised in one fix. You are allowed to evolve and make detours in bringing your visions to fruition.

Clarity turns your career from something that “happens to you” into something you design —and that shift makes all the difference. You take charge of your career plan, you lead, organise and control.

You steer the ship where so ever you want.

You define and build success on your terms.

That is how you build a fulfilling successful career.

Get a vision, gain clarity and build.
