Skill is Key 🔑
One of the things I learnt while earning a degree abroad is that people do not get a degree because they want to get a better job or become wealthy. This is because with or without a degree, you can still have access to all the good things of life - buy a good car, buy a house, get married, have children, travel to premium holiday destinations etc.
Infact, when I was studying for my M.Sc and working part-time as a support worker, I came to work straight from school looking all tired. My manager looked me in the face and asked me why I bother with going to university. She did not see any reason why I had to put myself through all that stress. According to her, she'd never do it. She was just 23 with a good car and saving up to buy a house.
The essence of a university education is to improve on your ability to think critically, broadly and rationally so that you can come with fresh ideas, theories and policies that will better the society. Acquiring a degree is not designed to be a means to wealth. Most of my university professors and PhD holders have no airs around them. They would pass you and you would never know. They are not rich.
In a couple of days, I would be sitting on an interview panel to hire a data analyst into a sister team of my department, and going through the applications, some of the applicants are PhD holders. I do not have a PhD but I am already occupying the position they are aspiring for and even a level higher. They won't be treated differently or automatically given the role because they have a PhD but we are hoping that having studied to that level, their approach to business issues will be different.
What am I trying to say? If the reason you are clamouring to go to Uni is because you want to make more money, you have the wrong reason. Go acquire a skill and make money. This mindset is why there are many unemployable graduates. Graduates who should naturally be artisans and excelling at it, wasting years in Uni and coming out no better than they were before gaining admission, save for a certificate which in the light of recent happenings could be gotten from any vendor. Be informed. Stay positive I love you always❤️❤️ Chimdinma Onwuegbu founder Precheks Consulting
